How to Become a Peoples Party Candidate
Standing as a Peoples Party candidate is a rewarding way to help grow our movement for positive political change in Australia. As a candidate, you'll have the opportunity to amplify the Peoples Party's vision for a more just, democratic and sustainable society.
What is Involved?
The level of commitment involved in being a Peoples Party candidate will vary depending on the type of election (local, state or federal) and the specific electorate. Some key responsibilities may include:
• Completing the formal nomination and candidate vetting process
• Participating in campaign planning and candidate training
• Staying up-to-date on Peoples Party policies and being able to discuss them
• Consider Attending community events, forums and giving public speeches
• Consider Engaging in door-knocking, phone banking and other field campaigning activities
• Consider Doing media interviews and engaging with voters
For winnable seats, candidates should be prepared for an extensive time commitment. For less competitive seats, a more limited local-focused campaign may suffice.
Candidate Requirements
To be eligible as a Peoples Party candidate, you must meet the following essential criteria:
• Be an Australian citizen over 18 years old.
• Be a ratified and financial Peoples Party member for at least 6 months.
• Additional requirements may apply based on the election type (e.g. residency, employment restrictions, etc.)
Desired qualities include:
• Strong knowledge of Peoples Party principles, policies and ethos
• Excellent public speaking and communication abilities
• Personal integrity and sound judgment
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team
• Prior community involvement is an asset
Nomination Process
The candidate nomination process is managed by the Party’s governing bodies for each election. Key steps include:
- Your local branch will open nominations and you’ll need to complete the required nomination form.
- The branch’s Election Campaign Committee will vet nominations and may hold a preselection ballot if there are multiple nominees.
- If preselected, you’ll go through a formal endorsement process with the state-level governing committee.

Candidate Support, training and mentoring.
The Peoples Party and campaign teams will provide significant support to endorsed candidates, including:
• Handbooks, training and briefings on policies/initiatives

• Potential “buddy” mentorship from experienced candidates
• Reimbursement for approved campaign expenses
